The first MTB trail you ever rode

Bike: http://amzn.to/2aDKuU3 Thanks to Diamondback for lending me this sweet Release 3! Review to come... As a mountain biker, you might remember the first trail you ever rode, and the clunker of a bike you were likely riding. You might have better equipment now, more endurance, and experience, but you can always return to that first trail and relive the day you started riding bikes in the dirt. I'm back on Long Island for the weekend, so let’s take a ride to Stillwell Woods Park, the place where I first went mountain biking over 20 years ago. I'm positive that my dad and I rode Stillwell without helmets, gloves, or any gear beyond water bottles. Back then I wasn’t aware of the finer points of mountain biking—none of that really crossed my mind. It didn’t seem like there was much room to improve this otherwise perfect activity. My ignorance was blissful. Over the years I’ve gained experience, become more opinionated, and spent a lot of money on bike stuff. This tends to happen when you become obsessed with something. While I think we can all agree that getting new stuff is awesome, sometimes you need to make due with what you have. It's during those times where you should think back to your first ride, and all the fun you had on that clunker of yours. Nobody can ever take that smile away from you, then or now. It’s been about 10 years since I last rode Stillwell, and a lot has changed. New sections have been added, and the trail has become more fun overall. As the sport, the gear, and the riders evolve, so too do the sanctuaries that trail builders carve from their respective hills. The Internet has made techniques and repair advice available to anyone, technology has made bikes vastly more capable, and generations of athletes have pushed the boundaries of what’s possible to do on a bike. I think we all have a lot to look forward to. So the next time you’re back in your home town, or wherever it was that you first rode a mountain bike, take a ride on those trails for old time’s sake. Reflect on how far you’ve come, and all the other trails that followed. Let it serve as a reminder for why you started riding your bike in the dirt in the first place. Thanks for riding with me today, and I'll see you next time. Stickers and shirts! https://www.sethsbikehacks.com/product-category/store/

Hey Seth! I recently got sent to Long Island for work and it turns out where I'm staying is a 10 minute drive from Stillwell. I'll definitely be checking it out when I get my bike settled in!

First real trail I did was a little over 11 years ago. Gooseberry Mesa, Utah. Camped there for 3 days and biked around the trails. Lots of slick rock, and technical trails. Did it on an old hardtail with a junk short travel fork, mechanical brakes, narrow bars and high tire pressure. Was with a boarding school trip. Next year I went back and went OTB over a 3 foot drop off onto rock and snapped by collar bone in half and broke a wrist. Had to camp out there for 2 days before driving 11 hours to a hospital.

I remember my first trail, it was by myself at Prospect park in Wheat Ridge Colorado, I was riding a 90s Specialized Fatboy BMX, not a mtb of course but I still had so much fun. Unfortunately the trails got shut down and turned into horse trails and bikes are banned. I would love to ride that trail again but not sure if I should take the risk, what would you do?
