Slow Death of a Carbon Seatpost - by downhill-rangers.com

Presented by http://downhill-rangers.com Qualification run for the Scott Gang Battle at the Freeride Festival in Saalbach Hinterglemm, Austria. My carbon seatpost breaks during the run. One of the three helmet cameras shows the 30 second "death fight" of the seatpost.

I ride carbon bars since 2006. My two bikes (downhill, all mountain/enduro) are carbon frames. I rode carbon seatposts, carbon cranks, carbon brake levers. Till now I broke a carbon seatpost and a carbon crank. But I also broke some aluminium frames, cranks, rims, ... Meanwhile I trust carbon much more than aluminium. The cracked seatpost from the video was caused by a seat post clamp screw that was tightened too hard.

Dh and cf do not play well together

Sattelstütze längst gestaucht (also beim Rahmenschlitz aufgegangen).

I mounted the camera with a paper handkerchief and duct tape. This year I drilled some holes in the Contour-HD mount and mounted it with tie wraps. But the mount broke (not at the holes) and I lost my Countour GPS after about 5 riding days.

The seat often twisted in the seat tube. Maybe the carbon assembly paste was already washed out. So I tightened the seat clamp screw more and more. I did not see that this cracked the seat post at the slot of the seat tube. This longer distance race had a pedal section and the steep sections where no problem, so I wanted to ride with a higher saddle. So the already cracked part of the seat post layed free and finally cracked after two days. (sorry, if I had not found the correct words...)

what causes the seatpost to crack actually? and how did you mount the camera?

When I realized that something was gone I first thought about that. Because it's much more common that the saddle mount brakes. Even worse was what happened to a friend: During a race qualification run his saddle broke. Such that the metal rods were still there, but the part where you actually sit on was missing...

imagine losing your saddle and you accidentally sit on it

why does all intenses sounds so crepy

I had to delete the previous Version including the comments because audio and video was out of sync after uploading to Youtube.
