Skinsuit Vs. Baggies - How Important Is Aero For MTB?
Fahrräder, Tests, online, Rezensionen, Bewertungen
For roadies, it's all about those aero gains, but how much difference does aerodynamics make in mountain biking? Our tech editor Jon Woodhouse has donned a skinsuit (so you don't have to) in order to find how much quicker that revealing lycra can be.

Roadies on their day off wear Lycra as they love looking at each other's bodies, HOMOsapian's the lot of them!

very interesting video. I think maybe for the average rider there might be a variable that could come into play. Confidence, he slightly touched on it with his crash but. I personally would be whiling to push a bit harder when wearing a full face and pads vs when wearing no pads a very light duty helmet and clothing that doesn't provide all that Much protection. Just my opinion but a interest thought.

Force that pulls you down the hill is m*g*sin alpha.
So while you wearing a heavier suit this will not just increase air-resistance but also the force that pulls you down the hill. So.......this will make the difference smaller -
daft thing is many people on mountain bikes have lycra under the baggy fashionista facade...so assuming they're out all day on a ride with a decent amount of ascending the weight of all the cultural garb is more of an penalty. Also from a psychological point of view, one is going to be more daring and potentially ride faster subconsciously when one is 'protected' and feeling safer..that's natural.

Unsurprising that you didn't get much of a difference in your roll-down test. At least in the footage you showed, you weren't moving very fast and, as you say, air resistance goes with the square of speed. A better test would have been to cycle down the fire road under power, rather than just rolling, especially since you seem to be pretty good at cycling consistently. (And, of course, this is why roadies care more about being aero: they cycle faster 'cos there aren't so many rocks or trees in the way.)

I think Doggie had a hard time catching up when he's on skinsuit... :D

my hillclimb got faster since street dogs chased me!!

if you take the airbags, air conditioning units and crumple zones out of a car you might be 1-2 seconds faster round silverstone than you would have otherwise have been. it doesn't matter if you die sh*t happens. Similarly the reason why Downhill mountain bikers wear full face helmets is that they've considered having a face with no teeth and have weighed that against being 1% quicker and have thought I like my teeth :)

I ride in lycra on MTB, always has been for 20 years. Honestly don't see the point of apprehension in all english mtb media against it??? Probably because I'm well built and 6'2, and don't feel being a pussy in it?!
