PART LIST BELOW. http://www.spinmotiv.com How to convert your geared mountain bike into a single speed. This video assumes you have the basic tools and know-how for regular bike maintenance and shows you the basics of setting up a single speed mountain bike. Part List (used in this video): Chain - SS specific, 8 or 9 speed cut to length (old SRAM 970) Crankset (old 3-ring fifteenG crankset with large and small rings removed) Short chainring bolts (Sugino Single Chainring bolt set) Chainring - SS preferred with no ramps or pins (Surly 33t, 104mm) Cog (Shimano single speed steel, non-threaded 18t) Lockring (used the lockring from a SRAM 9-speed cassette) Spacer kit (Spot Brand SS spacer kit) Rear hub (standard 8/9 speed Shimano XT) Chain Tensioner - (NuVinci, but currently use a Surly Singleator)

I bought myself a nice bike. A Trek Madone 5.5. Super ultra light carbon bike, love it. But its a single speed and where I live I need to go up and down quite a lot, therefore I would love to have it geared (doesnt have to be super sick with 30 gears but at least 2-3 or so). Is it possible to do that? Also, the pedals always move when you are driving, which means that you simply can never just "relax" your feets which I really hate as I am very used to relax my feets when I want to slow down or when I am in front of a red light and so on... can I fix that too?

Nicely done...very helpful.

I have an all city fixed mtband I was wondering if I can go bigger on the chain ring maybe up too a 52 tooth ring??? I'm riding maybe a 18 tooth chain ring. Is it possible to go to a 52 tooth??

I have a single speed mountain bike and the gear ratio came at 33T to 18T. I ride mostly on paved roads (sometimes gravel) and the gear ratio is too low and I'm "outspinning" myself. Anyone know what I have to do to increase the gear ratio? I'm assuming it's a similar concept to converting to single speed with just buying higher-toothed chainring, etc. like the video, but any help is appreciated.

Great video. Thank you

Can you skid with a tensioner like his one ??

I changed my bike into a single-speed ish... replaced the casette like he did in the video, but I got a spring loaded tensioner. (i kept the 3 front gears). I can't really use it though, as the chain jumps for a split second. anyone know how to fix this?

That little pointy thing on the inside of the chainring is best hidden behind the crank arm.

thanks!

why is it a challenge to ride?

What i use on my bike is a 48t on front and the cassette with multiple cogs on the back. I can`t use more than 3 gears without the chain going out of alignment. I can try using all of them,7 in number, but the chain will wear out or jump off, like it happens most of the time. I tried single speed and i cant tell that i like it.Lower top speed and less power up the hills. On a flat surface is perfect. I wouldn`t change to single speed.I think that 3 or 4 gears are a must. I go up the hills like a madman.
