Shimano FC-S500 Alfine Crankset - Installation and Review - Single Road Crank
Fahrräder, Tests, online, Rezensionen, Bewertungen
This single crank and a 9-speed cassette are all I need here in Minnesota where there are no hills to speak of. The pound and a half saved by eliminating the triple chainrings, front derailleur and cables and shorter crank arms produced noticeable results. Review and installation of crankset and Hollowtech bottom bracket.

1. Use the proper tools for the job.
2. Don't use a matel hammer on metal crank arms. At least put a piece of wood in the way or ideally buy a nylon hammer.
3. When the spec says how tight you torque something up, there is some leeway but please don't overtighten just because you think you're right. You're not right. The person / people who designed the part are right.
4. Don't 'spacer' chainrings, because that leads me on to...
5. Bottom-bracket noise is only caused by the bottom-bracket 5% of the time. The other 95% of the time it's loose chainring bolts, loose pedals, worn pedal bearings, loose cassette, worn chain on new chainrings or new chain on worn chainrings. -
Hi there, can I use this crankarm on a DuraAce-9000 BB? I've been told the chainstay is 42.7mm on this and that it may give me issues, I'm not sure what makes this BB different from the 9000. I am trying to run a 1x9 setup like you (42T in front, on a rear cog of 12-27 (an ultegra 9 speed)).
-
how do you know if you need a spacer in the drive side or not?
-
helped me out a lot thanks Mat

Matthew Brenengen,
Thanks for the great video. I want to do the same for my Specialized Allez but was told it would not be compatible since my rear hub is 130mm and the chain would run off. Does your Cannondale have the same size rear hub? Have you had any issues with the chain coming of if so? -
And great watch you have. Which brand is it? Thanks
-
Great review mate!!!
-
It's actually a nicely machined piece of aluminum - but unnecessary.
-
Is the chainguard metal or plastic?
-
Thanks for the comment - &@$. :) Actually, you think this was bad, watch my video on how to replace the seal in a motorcycle fork. If you are afraid to improvise, and maybe damage something in the process, then you should not be doing your own work. These videos are not intended for that type of person.

Thanks for making the video, but you are a bit of a hack. First the pipe wrench on the old BB then using a hammer to tap on the crank arm? I guess if you don't mind mangling the parts on your bike... it gets the job done.

The 45-tooth ring is removable. I had to move it from the back of the spider to the front. I assume other Shimano rings will fit, but have not tried.
-
thank you for taking the time to make this video. One question, can you remove the chain ring from spider to install larger/smaller chain ring? thank you.
