New SRAM 1x: First Impressions

It's been around in MTB and cyclocross for a few years now, but now SRAM is bringing it's single chainring system - known as '1x' - to road cycling. We checked it out and gave our opinion. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN. Neal was out in the States to try out the features of the new SRAM Force 1 groupset. We think a lot of riders could potentially benefit from a single chainring system. Gravel riders, triathletes, even criterium racers might prefer the simplicity and increased reliability of having no front mech. Cassettes can range as wide as 10-42 with chainrings available between 38 and 54. Less chain slap over rough terrain will also appeal to those who prefer bumpier terrain. Of course, you need to be pretty sure about the range of gears you need for the type of riding you do on a regular basis. And for you weight weenies out there, the weight saving of no front mech is offset somewhat by the chunkier rear derailleur. What do you think? Would you use a 1x system on the road? Having ridden and raced road bikes for all of ten years now i can say with absolute certainty that this system rocks. Sure it will not replace a traditional 2x gearing setup though its not meant to , what is it meant to do is give you more choices when it comes to gearing. The thing everyone says is cadence this and abrupt changes that well having owned a cannondale slate with force 1 since last year it is by far the smoothest shifting I've ever had. The jumps are there but the changes are so well thought out that the jumps are minimally felt, and for the trolls i have a few bikes specialized tarmac with super record and a caad 12 with dura ace disc so im well versed in what good shifting is. All im saying is don't believe the hyperbole just go to a shop if your curious and ride it I guarantee you'll love it.

this was my question on ask anything, clicked over to here,...and i'm the 1000 liker...whats the chances of that!!...

Surely the line the chain takes is less than ideal for most of the available gears? is chain wear greater with 1X?

Is there a benefit to a single front ring?
I'm looking to switch up to a cyclocross since my cheap hybrid is just too annoying.
I live in a pretty hilly part of London but go off road fairly regularly, plus Londons roads aren't the most amazing.
I can see not having a large range of gears being a pain in the arse. -
Great, now I want a cyclocross bike. That x1 setup looks so good to me. I love the simplicity of it. Less cables and stuff. Would be great for a commuter bike too.

I will stick to my 50/34 11/36 cross bike

all i can think of when i hear this presenter is the PC guy in South park

Have been riding a 1x11 with a 40 in the front & 10-42 in the back for about 2 years. Can't hammer in the top gear but can still go pretty fast. Can't climb super steep stuff effectively but can still pull it off, you just grind it out. Really like no front derailleur, like the butter-smooth shifting, see no issue with big gear changes, have never dropped the chain, have never experienced chain slap, no matter how rough the road. Granted, I am an older rider who doesn't race, but have done lots of large group rides, fondos & other organized rides & hold my own easily. If you think you'll never go 1x, you're wrong. Some day it will be the norm, especially now that SRAM has 1x12.

Wow, they just re-invented the five speed race bike I had in the 70's - Cool :)

American accents. Arrogant, self-promoting, brash. GNNNNNNGH!

Glad someone finally found a way to stop these bike-abusing CX perverts from cross-chaining.

I love the idea of eTAp on a 1x. I hope SRAM makes that available at some point in the future.

Ugh. The ratios don't tell the full story. The reason there were so many gears was to find your perfect gear for each terrain. Sometimes the perfect gear has only 1 more tooth. Its why there are 11-32, 11-34 and 11-36 cassettes. Who would choose the 11-32 if it was all about ratio extremes?

I think i may give this a shot. I'm looking into doing a frame swap from a 2010 Schwinn fastback to an All City Mr. Pink. A rival 1x sounds like a great build for my commuter bike. I was a little fearful of losing climbing performance because getting to school requires me to either climb a 8.5% grade or 6% grade. But 42 10-36 sounds like climbing may be slightly easier than my 50/34 12-27 set up

Never on a road bike I'd own.
-
As a noncompetitive rider, I like to shift the front too. It is fun shifting around gears as long as the shifting is smooth.
-
No mention of big jumps between gears which you don't get with a front derailleur. This is the issue that would put serious road bike riders off as they search for the optimum cadence.
-
My two questions about this are; isn't it a bit annoying not having the close ratio, as in the cogs increasing in size by only one tooth at a time? and; when will Shimano bring out their version of this (I don't like SRAM)?

WOO! SRAM 1x!!!! I CAN HERE THE FIXED GEAR RIDERS COMING. December is when I get my fixed gear parts for a track bike thing, so this might be on the list.
