What MTB could I buy with less than 500 pounds? Hard tail please. Cheers

Oh damn, I got a $400 GIANT bike and thought it was pretty good. Apparently it's trash

Me and some buds used to run when were were younger that picked it up again about 2 years ago and still going.I run a old vintage GT Avalanche no DB bake and they run Old Specialized stuff. These bikes in the 90's were winning some extreme races back then. Craigslist has them for 75-100 bucks. Use it for a year or two and if your still in it, then uprgrade to a more expensive bike. My GT costed me 40 uprgrade to a deore crankset/ different cassette, some SRAM derailers and some shifter....I'm about 200 total into it and know I will never test its limits as much as it was designed for.....The hardcore guys drumping 4G's on a bike kind of scoff at us but were out having fun and that's all that matters.

The problem with carbon is that if you crash and you scrape the frame the frame can shatter in pleases. I don't crash often but when I do I don't want the\frame to be ruined, the best value will be building a custom bike.

the problem with a lot of those cheap or entry level bike is,that many
of them have too big compromises in the wrong places,Too flexible
Bontrager duster 29er wheels, too flexible Shimano M552 cranks, even on
bikes that cost about 2500$,My trek
2014 fuel ex 7 29er had compromises too big compromises, the wheels were
too flexible, the cranks were too flexible, spoke nipples were made of
too weak alloy, they cracked and twisted from trying to true the wheel,,
and hits from stones damaged them too.the Bontrager xr3 expert tyres
worn after 4 weeks of
fast and hard riding, but tyre choice vary from user to user. But how
well the bike is spc'ed vary a lot, and my
fuel ex is too flexible,if I don't land a jump perfect the frame touch
the tyre, same when riding berms. So its best to test ride the bike
before spending money. -
if you want a a prebuilt entry level hardtail, I recommend a bike from a
direct sales brand like Canyon for example you can save about 30% of
what you would pay for a store bike. -
what about buying a $600 bike and then upgrading later on
-
I always will recommend the Raleigh Kodiak 2 or the diamondback atroz comp both can be had for around 1k-1200 and are full suspension bikes and can take the abuse they aren't refined and don't have the best components of course but still are great bikes for the price point!!

Quick question: have you seen any Kona bikes? They have a 120mm travel full-sus for $1500. Any opinions on these or that brand?

This was super helpful

I keep hearing about the extra rolling speed of the 29 inch rims, i'm wondering if this outweighs the negative aspects such as added weight to the rim. Would you recommend one to a larger framed person over the other?

I race motocross and at the races people are always riding mountain bikes, I used to ride BMX a lot and have an OLD I mean OLD Next mountain bike that I hate and probably isn't safe. What is a good bike, preferable full suspension that I can abuse and mess around with, most likely not trails, that is less than 1000 preferable around 600 500. Thanks!
