The Evans Cycles guide to mountain bike wheel size. We investigated two of the most popular mountain bike wheel sizes available, the 650b and the 29er. We take a look at them head to head in a number of key performance attributes, to see which one will come out on top. You can see the full range of MTB wheels at the Evans Cycles online store --- http://bit.ly/29AVYK3 The four key attributes we looked at to when comparing the 650b and 29er are, speed, acceleration, comfort and agility. Speed - First we compare the speed of the tyres, focusing on which bike performs best over rocky terrain, with the least amount of speed loss. The 650b has a large tyre, which allows it to roll smoothly over bumps & Rocks but, the 29er has a larger diameter rim, which allows the wheel to mover over bumpy terrain with greater efficiency. Acceleration - To test the acceleration of the wheel we need to identify which wheel get us from a standing start to move forward fastest. The 650b beats the 29er as the smaller distance on the 650b means that there is less bend in the spokes, allowing you to get from a standing position to top speed in a shorter time. Comfort - 29er larger size is more comfortable as it takes on the terrain with greater ease, due to the larger rim size. Agility - The smaller diameter of the 650b means that it feels more agile on the tight technical courses. That's not to say that the 29er is not agile, but due to the larger rim size it doesn’t feel as if you have quite as much control as you do on the 650b. No clear winner today, with both providing benefits; it therefore comes down to personal preference. Enjoy the Ride, Toby.
