Mega Avalanche on E Bike 2016. The first couple of meters down the slope I took it easy but after 3 seconds the race horse instinct took over. We did 40-50 km/h on the first part – then a turn – then 40 ish after the first turn and then 70 km/h on the steepest part – and I took it relatively easy (you could do close to 100 km/h) Even though we only started in 2 rows - It was like a war zone going down the slope, knowing that you could not stop, hardly turn and with people going down around you (see the video – go 5 min. in unless you want to see what it is like waiting with a lot of nerves) I got into some dirty snow and wanted to get back on the prepared slope but I turned into the slope just as it turns and BAM with 60 km/h into an ice block. Funny - I did not hurt myself but this is where the challenge just got a whole lot harder – The cable to my engine broke (I saw that when I got down) and I now had a 25 kg completely dead E-Bike and 95% of the race to go :o Well I was here to complete the race first of all so I found some motivation in being the first to complete the Mega on an E-Bike without power. The Rocky section was hell – I was still fighting a battle in my head and it was impossible to get a flow on the rocks with a heavy dead bike – This was not made easier with all the small assents where I had to get off and walk (at 3000+ meters you don’t run a lot ). It got a little better once I got out of the rocks and I manages to keep all the women behind me – even though I had to repair my bike for approx. 10 min. (they started 15 min. after us). My gears started to act crazy – I only had 3 gears that worked and that was just a little warning of things to come! Then the fire road from hell – It is long and I was walking with a dead E-Bike and having a big crowd going “allez allez” – man that was hot! I got to the summit and the long descent towards Oz started – great. I caught up with the nr. 4 or 5 girl and she helped my mental state by asking if I wanted to pass ;) Next disaster – The gearing was acting strange and then the gears broke completely. So with 40% of the race to go I had a E-Bike with no power and no way to pedal – Let’s just see this as an extra challenge ;) Some of you have seen downhillers going faster or at least fast without a chain – that is somewhat true but the problem is that the Mega has a lot of short to medium uphill sections – which means running for me ;) Okay – I finally made it down and crossing that line was epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All in all I got down in a total time of 1:14 – Even without taking the approx. 10 min. where I was trying to fix the bike out – It was actually not that bad since very few people finish in under 1 hour. Check out the pics and video – The GPS speedo on the camera has some delay but I think you get the idea of what it is like to ride the Mega glacier (sorry that the camera adaptor broke in the crash) Equipment wise everything that I did not brake myself in the crash did brilliantly – Thanks Haibike and WTB!
