   one problem though, it seems to skip the second to highest gear more often than not. Either way it just goes past it into the next gear. every time I adjusted something to try fix this the other gears wouldn't run smoothly so I've left it for now. have you any advice on what this could be? cheers.

7. sorry i did not mean it that way. this is what i do. i see to it that the axles are flush to the frame. with the chain removed and the cable uncoupled i push the derailleur manually to the largest cog and set the screw to perfect alignment same as with the smallest cog. install the chain. attach the cable to tightest as much as you can pull and lock. set the cable tension on the fly to flat and uphill roads until shifting is crisp. with new cables some amount of stretching will occur turn just do the same to set tension on the fly to adjust. easy for me and works perfectly

10. So in this case we are adjusting a newly installed cable? I have watched several of these "How to" videos, and in all of them there is nothing to indicate a proper starting point. I have a few questions, pardon me if they seem too obvious -
    
    1. What position should the front derailleur be in while adjusting the rear? And vice versa?
    2. Does it matter which derailleur is adjusted first?
    3. Can the high limit and low limit adjustments be made (roughly) without the chain on the bike? This assumes that an final adjustment would still be required.
    
    I see this was uploaded more than four years ago. Harrumph! I didn't have a second hand bicycle to adjust in 2012. Thanks it was helpful.
11. There are many videos and methods presented, by far this is the better of many, from an aducator.
12. my barrel adjuster is up by the gear shifter i believe...it is the same thing even though it isnt back by the derailer right? There is no adjustment barrel by my derailer..it either didn't come with it or it might have broken off?

16. Can anyone help me? That leaver thing below the cassette keeps jamming the chain. It shouldn't move forward and it does?
