How To Overhaul The Hub Of A Rear Bike Wheel
Fahrräder, Tests, online, Rezensionen, Bewertungen
I show how to overhaul the hub on a rear bike wheel (disassemble, clean, lubricate, and reassemble). Overhauling the the front wheel is pretty much the same, but simpler as you don't have to mess with the freewheel or spacers. There were nine 1/4 inch ball bearings on each side which is the most common for a rear wheel. Many newer bikes have sealed bearings which is a different process. Here is a new HD video I made of How To Overhaul The Hub Of A Rear Bike Wheel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_axwV6sfaAs **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -Website: http://www.RJTheBikeGuy.com -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy -Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=shyflirt1 -YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/RJTheBikeGuy

Man, I hate bicycles. I can fix any motorcycle, but taking the rear hub of the bicycle ... you've got to have special tools for every freaking nut and bolt .... and who knows which one I've got.

Hi, I'm looking to attach a 11spd cassette on a freehub for 9spd. I know it's 1mm too short, so I will need to swap the rear hub completely. I assume this video is not the correct technique I need. I in fact will need to rebuild my wheel. Is this accurate?

On a dry riding conditions how often should this be done in miles?

Good example of how to use a crescent wrench backwards, as in the wrong way. Always place it so you're turning towards the adjustable piece. The manner shown gives a worse grip and will damage the wrench, or could break the crappy ones.

If I were to want to use two bike wheels in an application similar to a cart application, is there a long axle I should be looking for that exists to connect the two or do I have to fabricate this myself?

Could the camera be any further away?

WASTE OF TIME

WHY EVEN DO THIS JUST SPRAY OIL IN ON EACH SIDE WHILE ASSEMBLE

Mark S, try a different shop. They might some in a used parts bin. You might be able to find some on ebay. The trick is trying to find ones that will match your hub. BTW, here is a newer better video of that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_axwV6sfaAs

Thanks for this, it was very useful! I replaced the freewheel some time ago on my bike, so I didn't want to go to the hassle of removing it again, especially since they can sometimes be so tight and hard to unscrew. I managed to clean the inside of the sprocket side of the hub using a screwdriver with cloth wrapped around it. I was also able to get grease into place with the blade of a screwdriver, and the magnetised blade helped to position the steel balls.
Have you any thoughts on leaving ball bearings in a magnetic parts tray? I wonder does it have any effect on their rolling in the hub if they get magnetised? -
What is the importance of not losing the springs from the skewers? I've actually lost one from the front and one from the back also.. :/

I have nothing but bad luck.It seems my bicycle is becoming obsolete,The 2011 Schwinn Wall mart side winder .My rear hub wheel shell is 35 mm wide outer diameter ,there are no caged bearing in amazon or eBay that would fit in side the shell.I'm guessing Schwinn is is making sure only they sell the parts and they want's you to buy a whole wheel ,They don't sell bearings.I have to go naked now,no caged version. What size bearing would be good for the rear hub shell that is 35 mm outer diameter wide? then i can hold that whit grease and no metal cages .!/4size bearings ? 3/8?.My front wheel except 3/16 cage bearing and i had to send back the 10 1/4 cage bearing , It was too wide ,to get my money back at a eBay .I know I need just 9 on each size ,What size naked bearing would be good?

Was this one of your earlier videos. I noticed you didn't use your magnetic pick up tool to take the ball bearings out. You are not using marine grease and don't yet have the the very handy grease gun for applying that. About safety, I would suggest that you could put a few warnings in. Paint thinner is toxic (brain damage) and we need to use it in a well ventilated area or I would even wear a vapor mask. The grease is also toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. Most mechanics now wear the blue rubber gloves. Failing that grease can be washed off with Solvol. Thanks for your videos. I'm overhauling a Malvern Star Sprint 12 and so I't great to have some demos on older machines.

I thought the problem was with my axle, but when I take the axle out and rotate the hub shell, it seems to be rotating at a very weird angle. Could the hub shell itself be bent?

I just found an old email from him saying - the rear wheel assembly had over an inch free play - So how does this damage happen? Thank you so much for responding - Very helpful & great channel!

I sold my bike which then had to be put into a car for a 6 hour drive & if it was placed in an awkward position with pressure could it affect the free play in the rear wheel assembly? As the buyer is now making out I sold the bike broken to him - But it is a brand new bike that I used for 2 weeks then left in my library - He refuses to get the bike shop to contact me in relation to this so called damage so thought I'd post on here to see if something could happen to a bike in a long distance drive bring in a strange position.
