How To Index Your Gears - Adjusting Your Rear Derailleur

Looking for smooth shifting? Here's our full guide on how to index your gears. Like our videos? Become a fan by clicking here: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Poorly set up gears is an infuriating problem. You'll find that either you'll skip gears or not change gear at all when you push the lever. Thankfully it's an easy issue to fix. Gears shift based on tension in the cables, which are adjusted via the barrel adjuster - you'll find it where the gear cable meets the rear derailleur. Small adjustments here will put more or less tension into the system and help solve your shifting problems. If you find the chain falls off your cassette when you shift into the highest or lowest cog, take a look at your limit screws. They essentially stop the mech from going too far over, which is what causes the chain dumping in the first place. Want to set-up your rear derailleur? Came here because my LBS who I have spent a few thousand pounds with by the way, did not have time for me the other day when I went in to ask the mechanic his advice on making my wheels as puncture proof as possible. Was told he was way too busy and that in no way could he talk. He was 12 feet away in clear view, the shop was empty apart from me and there were two other staff members on. To say I felt embarrassed is an understatement!! This soon turned to anger and now I want to tell them all to F>>> off. I will not be supporting them in the future and doing my own repairs and maintenance. If they go under and disappear then I shall cry no tears. Terrible attitude. If they treat me like this who has the ability to spend, how will they treat a young kid without much money. Idiots. A cycle is not built around rocket science, it is a very simple piece of kit, just need to be shown once and that is it. Youtube is the future!!!

I why did Si reach to the left brake lever to stop the rear wheel? Are you in backwards world?

Thank you for an informative video. Well done.

You guys just saved me! I listen to an Halfords website on how to set gears...which completely buffered up my gears.
Luckily I found this video and managed to set them ok.
Great video, thank you guys, big thumbs up from me! -
Hi guys, I really hope you can help. I've indexed my gears perfectly. But for some reason they keep slipping. I've noticed that my shifter "depending one which gear I'm changing up to" takes half a push, and others a full push? Any ideas? The bike is less than 6months old if that helps.

I have got a Specialized hybrid and I spent a small fortune trying to get the bloody thing to index properly. The whole situation had the mechs at my local bike shop scratching their heads with frustration. A list of thing changed Wheel, Cassette, Cables both cable and outers, chain, gear selector (upgrade). I was a hair's breadth away from changing the actual derailleur when the thought struck me JOCKEY WHEELS! A simple change of the jockey wheels solved the problem. Jockey wheels will very quickly become worn unless you have a set of jockey wheels with bearings in them. Most jockey wheels don't have bearings. Sometimes the simplest thing is often the solution. All it takes is a small amount of movement in the jockey wheels to stop the gears indexing properly when under load..

Great video, I sorted my gears in no time, thanks!

Thanks for the good video. I've been doing this a lot on many bikes for many years and as you mentioned in the end, it doesn't always go so well. The real game changer for me was to buy one of those hanger "alignmenters". That solved so many tedious tries to get all gear indexed. Typically I would manage to get the lower gears working great, but then the higher gears were all over the place - or the other way round but rarely could I set up the indexing for all gears to work properly.
After getting the hanger alignment tool I went through all my bikes (4) and the improvement was drastic. I could now index all gears perfectly, just as shown at the beginning of the video!
so, go to your local bike shop (LBS) and ask if they can align the hanger for you or buy the tool (at the LBS or online) and get the hanger aligned properly! Don't waste your time trying to index the gears when it just won't work. -
Is it pretty much the same process if you have a triple-chainring on the front?
-
I baught a new rear derailuer set it all up but when i set the L limit screw so its just under my first cog it wont go into my 8th cog even when i unscrew the H screw all the way.

Thank you for the video. I have been having trouble with my shifting and you just narrowed it down for me. Again thank you.

I need help. My bike is offset by one gear. How do i fix it?

Thanks for this video!

Newbie here. So, for the first adjustments for the rear derailleur the front derailleur should be on the small chainring. THEN, go ahead with the procedure you are outline here. I just had new cables, new cassette last year but I am only on my bike 3x wk and about 25km a time. It's a very old GT ZR3.0. Shimano105. drive My LBS told me that I'm going to need new shifters pretty soon. I can get some alignment but when I'm on the road the shifting gets sticky/jumpy from time to time.. Thanks for the tutorials!
