All bikes can be purchased for a "great deal" because the depreciation sucks! The only advice I'd give is to check out the serial number to make sure it's not hot. Also ask why they are selling it especially if they live in the city. If they can't provide a plausible reason something may be wrong - a hidden defect or a stolen bike.

I mean have you tried an app called offer up I got my bike out there for 400+ it's a felt f4 2014 and looks clean and great

Great deals go within hours of being posted on CL. I got into buying off of CL one summer and flipped a few bikes that I got great deals on, you have to look several times a day and offer to pick it up asap, else you will lose it. Best deal I made was buying a set of Zipp 404 wheels a few years old in perfect shape with 10sp DA cassette and the best tubular tires. New the wheels were $2000+, cassette $200, tires $200. I got the whole thing for $400 sold it for $800 4 days later - and that was a good deal for the buyer.
Road bikes that are only a couple years old can be had for 1/2 price. Many well heeled want to be riders spend a lot on a road bike and find they just don't use it much and sell 2-3 years later. They are great bikes if they fit. There will be very little wear 95% of the time.
Always know that you may need to change pedals, saddle and stem to fit you well. These are costs incurred with new bike many times anyway.
Being a ex bike mechanic makes it easy for me - no labor costs... -

I can true wheels and build aswell as fix bikes. To true a wheel you needd a spoke wrench a multi functional one works best I recommend park tools for around £ 10. You dont have to take the wheel/wheels off unless you have disc brakes. Flip the bike upside down rotate the wheel if possible otherwise loosen the brakes abit. You straighten the wheel buy tightening and loosening the spokes. you pull the rim left by tightening the spoke that runs from left of the hub to right of the rim and you pull the rim right by tightening the spoke that runs right of the hub to left of the rim. You also gradually tighen and loosen the surrounding spokes as you go round the rim. Then you gradually adjust your brakes by tightening the cable tension and repeat the truing process untill you are happy with the wheel. When you are happy with the wheels re adjust your brakes accordingly so that they function perfect to liking also checking the wheels rotation. If its good then your done and learnt something new. If you end up needing to tru your wheels in the late future for any reason you will know how and you wont have to spend a penny because you brought the spoke wrench.
