hey there bloke, i'm coming back to pushies after hanging them up about 25yrs ago and a lot has changed.. these old school diy tips your showing here are what i'm accustomed to.. my question is, all these fancy pressing tools are more essential due to aluminium frames right?.. and these new headsets use aluminium cups yeah?.. I've freaked out but am super impressed to see sealed bearings.. thank the mystical deity's for youtube...lol.. and glad I stumbled onto this vid thanks..

Great tips. I've done the all thread and the race removal but I never thought of the curtain rod. Thats great. thanks

the headset press doesn't seem to align the cubs very well though. I love DIY, but I like my headset press I bought on ebay for $20 which came with nice milled flanges that centre the shaft and holds the cups perfectly parallel, just like the old megadollar Campagnolo one I used to use in the 80s in the shop.

This guy cracks me up and I'm not even a fan of dry pommy humour! ;)

for the headset crown race, after i removed it, i just saw it open so it can stretch out, of course you only want to do this with cartridge bearings.

Stuff like this is brilliant, most of the time when I look at specialist tools I think how easy it would be to make your own alternative. I used a big vice to press my headset in, sure not everyone has a humongous vice lying around but I did and it worked a treat!

Really helpful video. I recently got given an old univega chromoly steel bike which was neglected, dirty, paint spattered and in need of repair (seized pedal, broken shifter). After stripping and thorough cleaning, most of the bike, the frame especially is in surprisingly good condition. I made this a bit of a project and have cannibalised my old ~1998 saracen kili pro which has some decent components but an alu frame that has seen better days. I was thinking how to go about removing the cane creek headset from the old frame and installing in my steel frame without specialist tools. Thanks

he looks like a 20 year old with gray hair. weird.

Brilliant Video! Agree with it all.Only change of note, I would install the top and bottom headset one at a time, and use a lot of washers taped together, much easier to get each one in straight. Apart from that, BRILLIANT!
