How to bleed Formula and Avid brakes
Fahrräder, Tests, online, Rezensionen, Bewertungen
Bleed procedure for the Formula disc brakes. You will need Formula or Avid bleed kit, T10 torx and a Dot4 brake fluid. Start with unbolting the brake lever from the handlebar. It needs to be vertical with the bleeding port on top. Then position the bike that the bleeding port on the caliper is in upper most position. Make sure the brake lever is higher than the brake caliper. Fill one syringe one half full of dot4 brake fluid and the other syringe one quarter full. Hold each syringe with the tip pointed up and slowly push the air bubbles out. Close each hose clamp and pull on the plunger. Bubbles will appear to form and enlarge. Continue to pull on the plunger to release all the bubbles so they can rise to the top of the fluid. Release the plunger, open the clamp and carefully push the air out. Repeat this process several times. Use a T10 torx to remove the caliper bleed port screw. Be careful not to contaminate brake pads and brake rotor. You can remove the wheel and brake pads and use the appropriate bleed block. Carefully remove the rubber o-ring. Use the one half full syringe and tread it all the way into the caliper body and open the clamp. Use a T10 torx to remove the lever bleed port screw. Tread the other syringe in the brake lever and open the clamp. Bleed the hose Gently push on the caliper syringe plunger to move fluid up through the system and into the lever syringe. Push until the caliper syringe is left less than one quarter full. Bleed the caliper Close the clamp on the lever syringe. Pull the brake lever in and fasten it with a zip tie. Pull out on the caliper syringe plunger to create a vacuum then gently push back to pressurize the system. Repeat the procedure several times until large bubbles stop coming out of the caliper. Do not pull too hard. Remove a zip tie from the brake lever but keep the lever pulled in with your finger. Apply the pressure on the caliper syringe plunger and allow the brake lever to slowly release to the fully extended position. Remove the syringe from the caliper and reinstall the bleed port screw. Don't forget the rubber o-ring. Bleed the lever Open a clamp on the lever syringe. Pull on the plunger to create a vacuum then gently push on the plunger to pressurize the system. Squeeze and release the brake lever several times to release all the bubbles in the system. At the end push and release the plunger one last time. Remove the syringe and reinstall the bleed port screw. Use isopropyl alcohol or water and wipe off any excess brake fluid from the brake lever and the caliper.

Thanks for this, helpful and clear step by step...
I don't think the poster below has valid points but let's not argue tech details...
I'll follow this process.
Thanks -
Merci pour ces explications !
Bonne route ! -
This is a terrible video.
First... DOT 4 brake fluid is HYGROSCOPIC, at 1:07 when the person is forcing the plunger down "to create vacuum" you can see the fluid being aerated by air leaking through the syringe plunger. That air has moisture in it. By doing that, they are introducing moisture into the brake fluid.
Second... YOU DO NOT NEED TO CREATE VACUUM TO BLEED BRAKES. Gravity and bottom up fluid flow does that.
Third... at 3:00 you can clearly see the fluid in the caliper and the fluid in the syringe are not the same and not readily mixing, they may not even be using the correct fluid.
Fourth... Where are the gloves? Seriously DOT 3 & 4 is nasty stuff. -
How often do the hydraulic disc brakes need to be bled?
-
Very helpful. I am goint to try and bleed mine without the kit and gaoing from top to bottom - same way that car brakes are bled.

Perfetto chiarissimo,grazie.

Thanks, easy to understand and very helpful.

great video. thanks

HI could someone please tell me where we are going wrong we are at the part of bleeding the caliper and when we pull back on the plunger it sucks bubbles out but when it says to push little on the syringe, we do and our syringe will bounce back to where it was? so we slowly pulled up on the syringe and loads of bubble just keeping coming out, ok and so we thought that will do for that, and then when we cut the zippy tie the lever stayed where it was could somebody tell me what we have done wrong and how to amend it please? :) CHEERS

This is useless

Best english ;)

doesn't work....well not if you have Formula Mega brakes anyway, I have the correct bleed kit and have spent the last 20 or so years in engineering (working on hydraulic parts for major airline companies), so I'm not some half-witted spanner monkey who has no clue about how things work. I watched lots of air come out my brakes and when it finally stopped (after 3+hrs of repeating the procedure) I figured they would work nice - wrong, they are no better than when I started.

What is the size of the O-ring under the bleed screw? I have lost it. Thanks

I follow your instructions. But after removing the ryving from the brake at the bottom, there comes fluid out of the system. I have tried it several times, but always the same thing. What is wrong? I have a Formula THE ONE, guess the model of 2008. Thanks for your support!

Fantastic video...extremely helpful. And her voice was actually quite nice/soothing...

thanks a lot- makes it really easy and works perfect the 1st time!
