How To Adjust + Index Your Gears – Mountain Bike Maintenance Tips

Get your gears running as smoothly as possible with our guide to indexing and adjusting. Subscribe to GMBN: http://gmbn.eu/Subscribe Smooth, well adjusted gears save a lot of hassle on the trail and can also save your ride; while poorly adjusted gears may not end your ride, one jump the wrong way and you could write off your wheel or even your frame. So, it's a good thing to stay on top of. The indexing and adjustment of your gears is done using the cable tension, barrel adjusters and limit screws. Sometimes, an old cable or worn out chain/cassette will be causing your problems, so make sure you check these too. Unless you're replacing your cables, you won't need too many tools for this job; in fact, a multi tool with a range of allen keys and philips screwdriver will cover it. Great general description of the likely issues to look out for as well as how to go about sorting out the settings. Thanks. I just found the text positioning often covered the crucial part of the visual display.

What about B tension? I just upgraded to a 11-40 cassette to use with my race face narrow wide, but having trouble with my deore mech, B tension is at its limit which is fine for the big cogs but makes shifting sluggish on the higher gears, I've got an XT mech on the way so hopefully this should sort it but don't see why it isn't working atm, also when i pedal backwards in the lowest gear the chain always slips down a couple of gears so don't know what that's about either, any help much appreciated :)

Great Video, thanks a lot! Question: I've got a 10gear rear cassette and a couple days back they were running fine and now the 7,8,9 (climbing gears) are not aligning the chain with the gears (the chain gets like above between the gears but does not go full on the gears), and it only happens on those, from 1 to 6 (heavier gears) and the top gear go in smoothly and quickly. Any advice? thank you !

Great video! It was super nice. I did have some trouble on my lower gears where it wouldn't go to the 2nd gear and would jump to the 3rd on the cassette. It seems to be ok but I was working on it for a while trying to get the gears to cleanly shift all the way up and down the mech.

This video helped me greatly. I only needed to adjust the barrel on my bike and my gear was good to go. It was skipping gears before this. Thank you!

Always align your drop. You can spend hours adjusting your gears but it won't do you any good, if the drop is not aligned. In most cases it is not even aligned brand new out of the box.

So I basically ruined my mech doing this,I'll take it to the bike shop to fix it

My bike shifts down the cassette but is having troubles shifting up? What should I do?

Need to ask, why in any name of the smallest bit of logic, would you put the REAR brakes on the LEFT but the gear shifters to the REAR on the RIGHT!!!
You drive on the WRONG side of the road AND have the brakes on the WRONG side!!!
The REAR gear shifters on the RIGHT should have the REAR BRAKES on the RIGHT. Rear wheel control on the RIGHT!!! ALL OF IT!!!! BRAKES AND GEAR CONTROL!!!
Right handlebar control = REAR wheel control!!!
It is logical and makes sense!!
Get with the program and swap that REAR brake control to the RIGHT, the correct and logical side!!!
Great video otherwise!!!
Always great content...just get that rear brake lever on the correct side!! -
How about the set up in the gear? where the pedals are?

Great video. Thx. Jd
