How I pack my bicycle without panniers

Pannier bags can be expensive and heavy, in this video I demonstrate how I attach camping gear to my mountain bike with 4mm ropes. I am preparing to cycle downhill in a mountainous bushland part of Australia. Panniers are great for people doing long overnight road tours on their bicycle, but on a rugged cross country trail panniers are a dangerous burden. When riding a bicycle in a seated position about 70% of your body weight is on the back wheel, with rear panniers there is simply too much weight on one part of the bike. For safe handling of sharp turns and more technical manoeuvres you need to move your body weight forward and back to help absorb the impacts of the trail. In the video I attach about 8kg of camping equipment to the bike's frame, this includes about 3 litres of water on the handle bars. The rest of my gear is around 6kg in a small backpack and bum bag. The total is about 14kg including food and water, if you were to place that much weight into panniers when doing rough downhill mountain biking you would likely get buckled wheels or lose control and crash. To BUY a Rab Event tent like you see in this video http://amzn.to/1MPnljv Don't forget to subscribe I have much more coming https://www.youtube.com/user/bushchannel

a big framebag that could fit the Tent would work well, i guess

Primitive! I'm surprised your bike doesn't have square wheels!

Loved this! A video for people who can do without the latest thing and who aren't too lazy to learn how to tie some great knots! Love the gaiters. Great idea!

The moral of this video, " Don't Pack Your Bike without panniers.".

Haha brilliant !

Nice video. Thanks for the sped up version. Nobody dislikes a video more than when it drags on. Thanks

I do something similar with bungee cords, but your idea with using your guy lines saves weight. Does the load stay stable while your bouncing around on the trail?
-
Great job, great ideas, thanks!

looks kinda unhandy if something were to attack and needed to make a dash
-
backpack is not the best placement! your back will be tired, wet and all around uncomfortable.
-
Hey wait! You forgot your camera!

Nice video. I like your use of time lapse with audio. Too many how-to videos on youtube are long and boring. Not this one.

Why do you have your seat situated so low???? You can't even achieve full leg downward compression? You have your seat situated like a freakin trick bike.

Tks for good ideas I am preparing my bicycle now I bought 30 and 15 ltre dry bags and sat and wondered what material I could cover them with and figured jean material would work and my jeans fit both bags size ladies 16 and size 14 Australian i just put dry bags folded on top into jeans with zip up and buttoned up and tied belt tabs together with 3 mm rope and then tied jean legs over front handle bars works well won't fall off u could add bungy straps and i will get mud guards for tyres definitely an epgiphany

Love the simple, impromptu look of this setup. No gear hanging off the sides and you don't look like a bicycle accessory salesman! Good job!
