Electric Motor on Downhill Mountain Bike "ego-kits.com"

Nov 14, 2013 - We are expecting our first child. Thus, the bike is now for sale. See link below: http://cgi.ebay.com/121219993652? *The ride video is up now* click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgcGmS9dsPk. My '05 Ellsworth Rogue with a 1200 watt electric motor from ego-kits.com. I thought the promotional material was a bit lacking in "mounted" look, fit and finish as well as assembly instructions. Installation was not difficult. If you work on your own bike it will be fairly easy. I had a metric socket/wrench/allen key set but did have to buy a crank arm puller. You will need zip-ties. Take your time. *Tip - Move regulator to mount in front of motor before starting assembly. It is the best spot for it. *Tip - Use blue thread lock on ALL bolts and screws. *Tip - The clearance between the inner sprocket and the ISCG mount bolts is very tight, so tight in fact that I had to customize some screws because I could not find any (6x1.00x16 -torx) screws. *Tip - To align drive chain properly, pedal backwards while looking at the chain position on the sprocket. When it rides in the middle, it is properly aligned. There should be approx 1/2" of vertical free play in the drive chain (this will stretch on first few rides so cary a 10mm wrench to adjust as needed) *Tip - From outside right on handlebar mount throttle, then shifter then brake. It just fits better this way. Overall fit is great. I was concerned about the width of the thing from the promo stuff but as you can see it is fairly small overall. The off road test was really fun. I rode it up two hills approx 700 vertical feet each with a climbing average of 4% grade with max grade at about 10-11%. Overall distance ridden was about 7-8 miles and I returned with over 50% battery left from a start point of approx 90%. You can ride, on motor alone, motor assist pedaling or pedaling alone. Transition between them is as simple as throttle or don't throttle, pedal or don't pedal. The motor will get hot if you run full power in too high a gear. This will trigger a thermal shutdown that lasts about a minute or so. *Tip - Use the motor in the same gear you could pedal the terrain in. Higher RPM lower load is better for extended climbs. I have not weighed the kit yet but it feels like it is about 20 lbs on the bike and the battery is about 10 pounds in the pack. I didn't really feel the weight of the kit in the handling of the bike on the trail except when pedaling without power assist which allowed me to feel the extra weight. I will answer questions if you have any. Oh yeah, If you like Maui, check out my website http://www.mauimyway.com.

I sold the bike with motor about a year ago. I leave the videos of the kit and ride up for your observing the fit/finish of the installed kit and the performance. I really enjoyed it while riding it but new baby and new house payment come first. Truth be told, I will probably never get another one as it is just too expensive to justify for me. Plus I found my fitness suffered due to laziness… If you have any questions I will still share the best of my experience with you.

Very cool. What are the drawbacks that you have experienced?
-
The new kits with battery go for $4,000.00
-
It's 3 thousand dollars? ?? Holy fkn shit how is that possibly worth it? I could do sooooo much more if I had 3k, I could build an electric daily driver anything for that much!

Actually any other good rider would never act as ignorant and stuck up as you are. A good rider would be giving help full tips a good rider in the sport would not be on YouTube calling someone out and telling people how good of a rider they are. Your a phony who has read a lot about mountain biking on the internet. So you use technical words to make you appear as if your the shit. Your a fool. Go be a fool some were else.

No Shoes?

how long does the battery last under conditions such as steep hills and trail riding? I hope you or anyone else who has experience with the kit might have an answer to this question.

Hey thats a really cool kit.. I like how it sets up to the crank sprocket.. Electric bikes are the way.. Its sweet to pedal and chill.. Then electric up a hill.. or even a quick thrill... i want one...

I understand your point about pushing the limits. As a Gold Medal winner in the California Police and Fire Games for Motocross in 2004 at Hangtown MX track, It was pushing the limits which lead to my blown vertebral discs and retirement from MX. This retirement left me wanting to ride something with a motor off road again that I could not push to to the point of destroying my body and ruining my career. This bike has succeeded, partially. It is no YZ450! Good luck racing. Scot Stevens

The point of my sharing this video was to expose this product to people interested in it. Clearly you were or you wouldn't have watched. If you learned by watching that this product is not for you, my post has succeeded. Strange that you are so interested in commenting on a product that would NEVER be on a race bike. My opinion, as a user of the product, is that it is for motorized joyriding and exploration... Continued

And to me, the downtube is the most exposed area on the bike, like i said, one GOOD crash and thats fucked. You are a complete novice and have chosen the wrong kind of bike for what i saw you riding in another video. That bike is built for downhill cup tracks, the harshest of terrain possible to ride , and you were riding footpaths, thats like mowing the lawn with a bomb proof suit on. Before i give any respect to you, I would like to see you ride some drops, rock gardens and jumps on this bike.

Riding lifts for me is a treat, I ride at Innerleithen for the vast majority of the time. There is no lift, so a steep push up is the only option. It has never done me any harm. And as a racer, pushing the limits of what is possible is something that inevitably ends up in a crash. I am a very good, hard rider, and if you ask any other good rider, they will tell you that the harder you ride, the harder, and more frequently you crash. So i expect things to break every so often...

*laughing* Never really listened before... I guess, a bit.

You sound like Nicholas cage! Damn

Many uses come to mind. For starters, easing or eliminating the need to pedal up hill with a heavy DH bike. Or how about access to DH terrain without a lift. Or...
-
Depends on gearing and slope you're riding on I guess...

top spêed?

The kit holds up just fine even after fairly serious crashes. If it gets torn off and disintegrates within one run perhaps you need to learn to ride better. You mention "blue trails" which leads an intelligent person to conclude you are riding lifts to the top, not pedaling. Fitness is not an issue for me. Exploring uncharted territory and climbing hills without lifts is my idea of fun. Comments on durability and fitness to purpose without knowledge makes you appear dumb, arrogant and sad.
