How to build a lithium ion electric bike battery pack from recovered used laptop batteries. Save hundreds of dollars by salvaging 18650 li-ion cells from used or even dead laptop batteries bought off eBay. My pack is 24 volt 20AH which should hopefully provide a 30-45 mile range per charge on my ebike (and cost less than $150 dollars). In the video I show you how to calculate the capacity, then wire and test the completed battery. UPDATE: The battery had a total capacity of 19aH. The groups of cells were slightly out of balance (3.3v, 2.5v, 2.9v, 2.5v, 3.1v, 2.9v) so I could rearrange some cells and get a few extra miles, but I'm happy enough with the results. I'm a little confused. I'm new to this so if I'm wrong, I apologize in advance. You have 72 cells. If they had 1000mah's each that would be 72000mah's or 72ah's. But yours have and average of...1400 mah's or so? That's a little over 100 ah's not 20ah's. Just saying. So you can go 5 times 60 miles or 300 miles (hehe).

Simple questions. I'm just starting out learning alot of this stuff but I'm still a little confused about one thing. Each battery holds about 3.7v and my motor is 24v so wouldn't I need somewhere around 7 ion batteries to build a 24v battery. I see in the video you have much more than obviously so either your system needs more power or is it that you can use more 18650s and make it distribute 24 for a longer period of time. Again it's a pretty novice question but we were all novice once.

Good work...I am redoing my 92 volt pack and instead of using nickle strip using the copper that you did as I had a problem with huge resistance on mine. The little 50 watt charger WILL NOT be able to charge that pack..lol..maybe in 2 weeks... ;) Im wondering because you are using thick copper instead of very thin nickle sheet, what kind of sag do you get?..do you have a watt meter to measure this?... You havent attached any balance wires...how are you going to balance the pack?

Sinds everybody compares lipo charging and li-ion charging at 4.2 volts well if you look up the data sheet of real Samsung li-ion from a dell battery pack then the charging Voltage is 4.35 ±0.05 V!!!

you shoud make a dynamo on your front or back wheel like a altenator on a car so even while your driving your charging your batteries

You can easily setup an arduino with a solenoid to cut the on time of that welder down so it wouldnt blow holes in the cells.

Hi I have an error 8 message on my Chinese 1500 watt 48v ebikemotor kit any ideas why the motor will not switch on? There is no pas attachment. Only one white wire not attached to the motor to controller. Brakes not attached. Pas not attached. Sensor not attached. Thanks Robert

are these batteries patented, like if i used them to build a commercial product would i get in a lawsuit

$9-12!?!?!? Not even 4500mah 26650 batteries cost that much. You can get good Samsung li-ion batteries from li-ion wholesale for $5 (less if you buy in bulk. and yes they are legit Samsung)

You can also get a BMS for the battery pack so you can use a standard laptop charger, no special li-ion battery charger necessary.

Hi Mike I have a question about balance charging. I don't understand how you are going to benefit from using a balance charger if the batteries are already connected in series and parallel. Wouldn't you need to disconnect the series connections before connecting the balance charger so you have isolation of each bank?
