I upgrade the wheelset on my home built CX/Gravel bike. It still had the original Trek 700 hybrid wheels with a 7 speed freewheel. I upgraded them to hand built road bike wheels set up for a 8,9,10 speed cassette. I installed a 7 speed cassette on there with a 4.5mm spacer. That way I could stay with the 7 speed shifters for now. I plane to upgrade later to 9 or 10 speed on the rear. hey I'm planing to do a similar thing but was wondering could i put disc brakes on a steel bike that has rim brakes?

How much does a project like this usaully cost you? Or how much did this project cost?

I hate to be critical of your upgrade... but I'd rather have the original wheels. The road wheels you bought are likely 15mm inside width and the old ones 20-21mm width. The narrow rims are much more likely to pinch flat 32-35mm CX tires at race pressures (32-38 PSI for tubed clinchers). Likely you'd want such pressures too for serious single track riding.

If you're setting the bike up for dirt trail commuting (say 45-50 PSI), the narrow rims aren't such a problem.

Anyone know which rear 8/9/10 or 8/9 speed freehubs are only 130mm dropout. The only thing I could find in an upgrade wheel set were 135mm dropout.
