MTB maintenance guru Justin Loretz talks us through some common causes and how best to identify them. Sorry but cranking on those bolts without a torque wrench is very unprofessional... Those saddle rails are carbon fiber, and that CRACK sound did not sound nice... Heard it on the handlebars aswell as he tightened the bolt. Might be just a bit seized bolt, but you can't go around tightening bolts without knowing the torque on carbon components...

It's really helpful. But I'm still trying to find the cause of the world's most awful sound in my bike!

Great little video. Thank you...

Wait a second...listenn,,,Listennn...
...Nope - I can't hear any bike noises over the stupid MUSIC that you have playing loudly over your comments and bike squeaks!
Why simply point out where noises MIGHT be coming from? There is nothing like actually listening to the real mystery sounds of a noisy bike and then demonstrating how to properly track down and troubleshoot those creaky, scratchy sounds.
The first thing to identify in response to some weird noise is whether it is a sign of imminent danger or disintegration. For example if I hear a rubbing noise -- is it caused by a fender that is rubbing or a brake part that is misaligned? What level of severity could it indicate??
Too bad, really. This video could have been very interesting and informative! -
Thank you for the info!! I was on a long bike ride and was going uphill and pedaling with all my weight and all of a sudden I heard and felt an annoying click coming from the drive chain and could feel it through the pedal. I thought crank bearings at first but low and behold I stripped a chain ring bolt and it kept flexing the ring when all my weight was on the pedal!!!!! It was loose and I could keep spinning it and it was not tightening. Going to get some new bolts

I had a really frustrating creaking noise, when pedalling up hill in particular, it appeared to be from crank arms/bottom bracket I would have bet mo ey that that was where it was coming from, so off with both components regreased etc, next headset off regreased even removed front skewer and greased, but no joy still the same creaking under load Yesterday had a rear puncture took wheel off and repaired, put wheel back on and you guessed it,, Total silence from bike, not a squeak/creak anywhere. You really do have to explore every avenue, hope this will help someone, regards Dave

My new fully made clicking noises when riding it - just solved the problem: when weight pushed down the saddle it made a noise and also on realeasing the weight again. I ended up disassembling the saddle and every part of it and greasing it a bit - noise is gone now :)

I have a ticking noise that is loudest when pedaling but persists even when I'm not pedaling. My local bike shop has tried to fix it twice but to no avail. It is driving me bonkers. What could cause a ticking noise that seems to happen once or twice per revolution of the wheel? (Regardless of pedaling). Thanks!!

Really useful video, thanks!

Wow! "Tighten your bolts"..... Really? Ya think? I never would have guessed. Nothing to see here. Thumbs down.

i had to watch a 5:34 video so he could tell me to tighten all the bolts on the bike...
-
Thanks, found it was my bolts in my seat posts that were loose, never new how much bolts can loosen over time. Thanks
-
Thanks This Helped A Lot. Never Thought the Slightest Twists of bolts will stop the creaking.

My pedals are clicking when I climb hills, so I shall run some checks, already removed & regreased pedals & even changed to different pedals just to test, but clicking still there when I apply pressure uphill.

Please, i need help. Mi rear deraileur hits the gears/cassette when i jump or when i cross a stone road. How can it fix it? it's a really hateful noise, sometimes i'm afraid 'cause i think mi bike will get broken. It's a Shimano Tourney. :(

huge glaring practice not mentioned in the video is torque wrench to be used to tighten it to torque specification
-
Thanks

That's because many paid bike mechanics, especially the Halfords / Bike Hut ones, think knowing about bike technology is like understanding rocket science and fail to realise that if you can tell your ass from your elbow, buy bike tools on Ebay & have at least one hand; you can adjust, repair or replace any & every component on any bike and it WILL ride perfectly. They automatically assume you'll fail to grasp what torque spec's are.
