always hated that job on my bikes because of the wrestling match with the grips, used to use hairspray or soapy water, zip ties nice ! never saw that method

Your buddy is right - you can pull on them some and they will stretch to length. Maybe next time, put them on first, then cut them? Zip ties are a good tip! I always bareback that shit.
