Internal cable routing almost completely eliminates your primary causes of poor shifting. Oiling a cable is a short term fix for friction in the system, however oil will allow more dirt and grime to stick to the cable meaning you will need to continue cleaning and oiling on a regular basis otherwise you will have shifting issues. I have had one gear cable break, it broke where the outer cable housing meets the STI lever on an external system. Again dirt and water can enter these external STI systems causing corrosion and therefore poor performance.

would gt85 be ok to use to put on the cables?

I just went over to my bike and used your slack derailleur cable trick to lube my shifter cable. Ha! Good trick!
