See how the pros set chain length in this quick video. Greg prefers to use a slightly different chain sizing technique than most. He uses the small-to-small sizing technique that is employed by most bicycle manufacturers. With the correct derailleur (short cage derailleur with 28t max cog or mid cage with 32t cogs) and chainrings (a manufacturer intended spread such as 34-50, 36-52, 39-53, etc), this will always ensure that your chain is the right length to work in every possible gear combination. If you are using a wide range cassette with a short cage derailleur or prefer an unusually large jump between chainrings and have a custom setup, you'll need to set chain length in the large chainring and large cog to ensure that your chain is long enough to prevent damaging your derailleur or frame.

Are you guys sure about the direction of the open end? The Shimano dealers manual says the outer link should be "at the front end in the direction of chain movement", ie in this video it would mean it would be in the left hand?
-
I am really confused by statement that open end should face the back of the bike, both ends look like they are open to me.
-
Is this the same logic if I am going from a 12/25 to 11/28 at the back?
-
i want try that method small chaining and small cog
-
Works for me.. In less than a minute..

Shimano says with the chain on the biggest chainring and smallest cog on the cassette, the derailleur cage pulleys should be 90-degrees perpendicular to the ground. Why does no one use this chain sizing method?
-
So where's the sizing?
-
Didn't even show how to size the chain!
-
Shimano give excellent chain installation instructions. Just read the instructions! Oh and STAY SAFE!
-
Of course, if you have rear suspension, the exact same advice still applies :/
-
Does the BIG/BIG + 2 method works for a Sram Wifli 11-32?
-
Right so, the rear derailleur doesn't get pulled to the 6 o clock position and then the chain cut to size?? From what he's saying is you pull the chain and near enough let the RD lay flat????

Does it like a pro
