I'm running a Shimano Ultegra on my vintage Klein mountain bike, because the derailleur is light in weight, it's relatively inexpensive, and I don't thrash off road in a way that would jeopardize its integrity. Back in 1989, they built bikes with dropout widths that only accommodated 7 speed clusters (at least in my Klein.). So the Ultegra fits, covering my 7 speeds with 3 to spare. Who says we need to run mountain bike-specific parts on a mountain bike? I'm with Bikeman on this one.

You are the man Mr.bike man!
-
Fair play I have huge respect for people like yourself who provide us with free help with our hobbies .Much of it you couldnt find very easily anywhere else
-
Well that's cause most of what they fix is going to be older/cheaper bikes, not everyone and their mom shells out $3K for a Road Bike with the latest tech.
I'm sure they can read a manual and figure it out if they need to.
Ignore the trolls in the future -
A person puts the components they decide are best for their use. You did nothing wrong,... The guy was shooting what he thought was knowledge out of his blowhole! Sounded like he "Shatnered" himself instead.

If that bike pictured has a single chainring you can get away with almost any RD you like you dont need a long cage. I mean how much slack could there be to take up? The reason we have these super long cage RD's and expect to see them on everything is because of MTB's with 30 tooth differences in the front and 20+ in the rear. thats a lotta extra chain to keep up with! especially in a cross chain situation.

Well said Bikeman,
What counts is that people keep on cycling who cares what specs they use! Or afford. -
Yo, BikeMan:
1. You have uber-Cred with regard to bike knowledge, this means you don't need to answer to criticism from someone with zero Cred.
2. You've been on youtube long enough to know that you can't get so upset with negative posts like that. Be the pro that you are and ignore the trash talking trolls.
3. As far as trolls are concerned, they consider it a victory when they see you getting upset or responding to their inflammatory posts.
4. Getting upset is bad for your health and I want to see a lot more of you vids, especially the BMX ones which have been especially helpful to me in the past. -
You tellem Bike man ha ha

Hey Bikeman, really appreciate that they're are still people like you that are willing to think and go out of their way to find a solution out of the constrains of what is considered "right", and to show your failures and many successes. This is the reason I watch your show because you are honest, and are willing to work with what you have, and what you are exhibiting is what has made our country so great inventing and discovering things over the past 230 years!
I just hope Atxpeaceman can see the error in his ways, and soon. because once you can think outside the box and try to make use of the things you have in front of you (to include your brains) he will get much farther in life than with the crappy attitude he exhibited with that comment of his, and also become much more than just a parts changer in the job he preforms. -
Hey Bikeman, You are the man, bringing kindness and passion into such a competitive world. The world of bikes that should and will always be accessible to everyone is a lot better with you in it(not to say at the center of it in my opinion). please do not let this get you down and in anyway paint your day in other colors. Thank you again for your constant efforts and great advice that is free and comes from a true and caring place.

I laugh at the guy's comment. It shows he himself has little experience with bikes in general. Road vs mountain derailleurs are purely marketing terms, with the main difference being road derailleurs are mostly short cage vs mountain with long cage, but both mountain and road come in short, medium, and long cage variants. The performance is identical, and as long as you have the proper shifter for the derailleur (1:1 for SRAM, 2:1 for Shimano), no problems will occur. Even as an enthusiast I am well aware of this; I have a long cage Sora on my MTB that works flawlessly.
Contrary to what the "experts" say, it's perfectly fine to mix-and-match drivetrain parts. I have a SRAM chain and cassette paired with Shimano derailleurs, Gripshift shifters by SRAM, Sunrace cassette, and a Truvativ crank all on the same bike. Cost effective and just as reliable as a pure blood drivetrain. Stuff like this only comes with experience; the industry doesn't want you to know that so then you will be suckered into buying a whole groupset with the rationale that everything must match. -
People would be amazed at some of the combinations of parts that can be reworked and incorporated on a bicycle frame...I/m with you Bikeman--

Well done bikeman4u , some people just don't get it.

Hey bikeman, not everyone has several hours to watch you and your shop buddies meander around and fix bikes. Maybe condense clips or highlights of your workday into it into shorter 10-20 minute VLOGs? I think you would get many more hits and views. Best of luck, I am posting this as constructive criticism...

All ur videos helped me build my first fixie mr.bikemanforu
@bikemanforu -
From snowy Vermont Just so it is out there, I never asked Bart to help me till after I had brought the frame fork bars and stem and component's I had the bike almost put together, I was looking for a crank and emailed Bart at Bikemanforu, and he helped me pick the crank. I meet with Bart and Marco on Friday the 2nd most of the day and we went through the bike and all mistakes on that bike are MINE not his!! He is fixing all my mistakes and the three of us got a good laugh out of it along with Toni Jo and my wife. You got issues with the bike then take them up with me! So when things aren't right that's when you go to the Dr.

Yea if he had watched the show he would have a better understanding what was going on. thumbs up Bikeman calm, collected and informative.

Best answer yet from Bikeman,
I have Three phrases
- Let's see what you got for me
- OK, So you got a bag of mixed and match
- Well, let's see if it works
Yes ,I have a following of low end bicyclists, but just as well I have a high end bicyclists, that come to me because they know that I am going to try.
In both cases they are satisfied, and I have steady business
Good attitude Bikeman -
