29er or 26er - First XC Mountain Bike for Beginners #3

MTB 29er or 26er - What to Buy? So you have just started mountain biking or are about to and would like some helpful tips to get you going? In this case, 26er or a 29er? If you haven't already seen my first two videos on the subject, I suggest you check them out: The 26er and 29er refer to 26 or 29 inch wheels. Now, this is the easiest decision for a beginner to Mountain biking... Go with the 29er. The 29er will better assist you with rough terrain and uphill climbing over a 26er any day. The only real reasons you would want a 26er are for a little less weight and better technical control. However, let's be honest, if you are just starting out, an extra ½ pound won't significantly affect you... and it will be lots, likely years, of practice before you get into the crazy west coast technical skinny stuff. That's it... Unless you are a pro, just stick with the 29er. Once you put 1000 kilometers under the tires, you will know if you are ready to go for the serious tech stuff that 26ers are good at. Thanks and have fun out there.

I can't figure out which size bike to get if I'm 5 3
-
and you just gave me the answer I was looking for.. Thanks.

you shouldn't have added the word "beginner" unless the rider is a young kid and 4 foot tall. the 29 is more agile better equipped for nav of the rough trails and handling is easier through better momentum. an improvement overall than the 26" so the word
" beginner" has no business here. -
para mim uma aro 27,5 seria ideal.
-
I vote 26er. Lighter, easier to get rolling, better control. But, I am 53 years old. No downhill for me. LOL
-
Put a 26er on the front and a 27.5 or 29er on the back and see what kind of performance is achieved. This would be interesting. This was done in the 1970s by the introduction of the Mustang bicycle in North America - the first bicycle that possibly used the concept of smaller wheel/tire(less wide than back) with larger wheel/tire(wider than front).
-
I use to be a staunch 26er. Then, I bought my first 29er. The bigger wheel size is not just an improvement, but completely energizes my riding to a new level. A smoother power transfer is the most critical advantage of the bigger wheel.
I'm coming back on all the videos on Google's Youtube to retract my previous comments against the 29er. -
This is AWFUL advice to give to new riders!
First thing is first - go with the bike that fits you the best (size, sport and confidence).
Telling everyone to just "get that bike" - is the same as picking a bike for its color.
I WANTED a 29 because I felt it would have been beneficial to my cross country riding, so I went to my local bike shop to test ride. Rented one to hit the trails with. It seriously felt like mounting a bloody elephant for me. It did have a much smoother ride but the position on the bike felt quite awkward. I just decided to stick with my 26er as it fits my body much better. -
dude you're American as shit, dont use kilometer like a douchebag.

All other things equal, 26" rims are better at climbing. Using a larger wheel is like being in a higher gear. If you have a 2:1 ratio gear, one rotation of the pedals will move you 2(PIX26) or 163.362 inches or 2(PIX29) or 182.21 inches. A larger diameter wheel will be better over holes and bumps, but they also raise the bike and the center of mass higher and there is no way around it. The further your mass is from the ground, the more likely you are to fall. There are benefits and drawbacks to both wheel sizes. There is also a new emerging standard between 26" and 29"

safe to say whatever differences would be totally shadowed by rider
-
Surely height of the rider would have something to do with your selection? This video would have been better with some more info showing what was being spoken about, not just images with no relevance.
-
You got that the wrong way round
-
Wel I ride a 29 er and a 26 er and like them both ,there are very slight differences , I think it all comes down to the rider and what they prefer plus , I keep myself in good shape and enjoy myself when I ride and to say that I could beat some one on a 26 er because I was on a 29 er or 27.5 would total rubbish its a lot to do with marketing hype and just making money , just ride what you most happy with and most of all enjoy it , atb steve
