27.5 (650b) vs 29 - A Discussion on Wheel Sizes
Fahrräder, Tests, online, Rezensionen, Bewertungen
This video discusses the wheel size options for mountain biking to help you decide which size is right for you. This is a follow-up to a video that I filmed on the trail where I compared lap times and ride qualities of a 27.5 bike and two 29ers.

Thanks for this video. I'm currently deciding between the Diamondback Overdrive Sport 29er and the Giant Talon 3 (27.5). I definitely need an XL frame. But not sure which one to get.

I've watched both with great interest, I have been out of mountain biking for some time, mostly lack of time for it, that has changed, and, boy, everything has changed with it!
The jury is still out on 27.5 or 29 and now, there is 27.5+ or 29+ just to complicate it, still, I am looking towards hardtail, in the past, it was ridged, so one step at a time :) But I tink 29 is probably the way for me, anyway thanks for the in depth analysis, it has probably solved at least one part of my choice, groupsets are the next one! -
Excellent, if you're in two minds which is the one for you, watch this!

I ride at a high level expert-pro XC and Super D-also test rider and too many articles say "if your 6 foot plus you will be better off on a 29er" False evidence - what if your 6'2 and you have a technical tight single track background or you ride motocross for fun on the side? The last thing you want is a taller wheel base size when your digging in deep tight single track turns- or say you have no technical single track skills and your 6'2 , why would you want to be taller over the bike? makes no sense because it does not give you the feel of low gravity in control type handling- if your a beginner or pro rider and your attacking fire roads then a 29er all the way- I have both 29er and 27.5 and over it is hard to feel the difference other then 27.5 kicks ass in tight sections then 29er- if your a kick ass rider over all I swear to you that you will barely tell the difference on either or- Like my buddy Aussie said "SAME LAP TIME" ! LOL

Great, thorough analysis and reviews. What do you think of Fuji and GT bikes (full suspension)?
-
good review do you know any 27.5 full suspension bikes for under £550 or £600

Thanks for the vid. Think Imma go with 27.5... I'm doing it for fitness and love tight sections

Hi Clint, coming from riding road bikes, I am going to buy my first mtb. Right now i am pretty sure that it will be a Specialized Stumpjumper. What I am not sure about is the wheel size. I am 1,83m at 81kg. My goal is to ride trails but also to do some alp crosses which means a mixture of both uphill and downhill. I wana have some fun riding the bike but most importantly I wana have a bike which gives me not only the feeling of safety and control once it gets a bit too fast on a downhill passage. Would you recommend I should go with 27,5 or 29? Regards, Markus

very informative. time to retire the 1997 cannondale. Leaning 27.5 now.

I really like the 29er for out here in Southern Cali where I ride. Lots of huge rocks and choppy terrain and the 29 goes over this stuff like a bulldozer. I go over curbs 10 inches high like nothing. I also like the 29ers for the steep climbs i do. I have 3 29er bikes and love everyone. All Specilized...2016 Specialized Stumpjumper HT Carbon Comp, 2015 Stumpjumper FSR Expert, and a 2014 Specialized Epic Marathon.....the FSR stumpy is my favorite by far and while I've toyed with checking out the 27.5, Everytime I hit those rock gardens I couldn't imagine going over that stuff on anything smaller than a 29. On the downhills with the millions of sharp turns, sometimes I wish I was on a 27.5 but the challenge of the 29 is a blast....

Thanks for posting this vid. Very interesting. I have had a trek fuel ex 9 29er for two years and have loved riding it. I have placed an order on a Santa Cruz Hightower. You can get this bike in a 27.5 plus or a 29er. The 27.5 comes with 150 forks and the 29er comes with 140 to keep the geometry the same. Before today I had never been on a 27.5. I took out a SC Bronson and although it felt good it didn't feel as good as the 29er. I mainly ride cross country and single track. The 27.5 felt a bit short and weirdly my center of gravity felt a bit high. I felt like I was too far towards the front of the bike. It also felt a bit harsh on the decents and I lost traction on a couple of the climbs. I think I'll be sticking with the 29er version of this bike but worst case I can just extend the fork and get a 27.5+ wheelset. Too many choices, especially in one bike can be quite confusing!

Watched your last video and this follow up. Superb. Makes a lot of sense from my perspective. I just went from exclusive 29er full suss and hardtail to an Anthem SX 27.5 and stuck with my 29er hardtail. I always felt that I was cumbersome on the 29er full suss, the new anthem 27.5 is much more like the old 26" bikes I rode for handling. I feel much more comfortable now on twisty trails. Exactly as you stated the 29er is still the go to for long miles on simple straight trails. Glad you took the time to go over this in some detail.

what's the point in making a video about the differences between 29 and 27.5 if the only one thing that you can see is the face of this guy?

Hi Clint, was very sad when GT dropped 29r Zasker's. my 2012 Zasker still good but in 2/3 years time will be making it my winter/training Bike (as our lovely British winters always mega mud/wet) and look at getting another HT which will be my main race/XC Bike. As posted before like racing with social XC riding with club riders mostly. love GT Zasker's will that still be a good choice in the future? of biggest pain is currently a good set up with main race wheels (with mostly dry/slightly wet conditions tyres - Spesh Ground Control 2.3 FR/Ground Control 2.1 rear or Fasttrack 2.2) and winter/wet weather wheel set set up on spesh Storm Control 2.0 tyres front & Rear so can change things out quick if weather changes in our unpredictable UK climate race day. Changing all this stuff to 27.5 would cost a lots!! I'm a light rider at about 70kg & 5ft 8" tall. Do you think Clint in years to come GT will bring a 29r HT race bike back? Race Scott in the past (my old race days in the 90's so soft spot for them too). Apologise for the lon winded text/sort of long winded question.
