2017 Trek Fuel EX 9.8 27.5 Plus Test Ride & Review
Fahrräder, Tests, online, Rezensionen, Bewertungen
Bike Details: http://bit.ly/2j034Lf The 9.8 27.5 Plus is an absolute blast to ride and I'm really torn on this review.... I come across as maybe not liking the bike in the video review but that's likely more a function of my riding style, trails I ride and the fact that I've not spent any time on a plus size bike. I think this would make a great bike for anyone still looking for some more confidence out on the trail and is still learning to really lean the bike over in the turns. It would also really benefit anyone looking to gain more climbing ability. Let me know what you think in the comments below... This is just my opinion and your mileage may vary! I thought I heard the bottom bracket making noise.. that is the one noise that drives me nutts!. haha I think when I buy another bike it could be a plus! I prefer bigger tires always

The adjustable geometry on these bikes make almost too much of a change to them. Was this demo bike in the slack position? That would increase the amount of pedal strikes if it was. Also air pressure in these higher volume tires can change BB heights considerably along with proper sag of course. The fact you mentioned it felt like riding on marsh mellows makes me wonder if the pressures may have been a bit too low. A 1psi adjustment to these tires make a huge difference to overall performance. Without verifying where all the variables that contribute to a lowered BB were at the time you Demo'd it I think it's unfair to have placed so much emphasis to the pedal strikes and not enough time on the strong points on this bike.
It is my experience with demo days that the technicians run the tires and suspensions softer to give the rider a feeling of plushness, which is an immediate and great first impression to make on a potential buyer, but if it's ridden even moderately aggressive, you will gets lots of pedal strikes. Been there, done that.
I am subscribed and enjoy your channel. I think you do a great job giving viewers your reactions to all these bikes. Most times those reactions are better than words ... keep up the good work. -
can you test ride a scott bike, thinking about buying one thanks

awesome review. very helpful. seriously looking at this bike. loving the channel so far too!

I just rode that bike too. Those big tires climb up anything! It would be a great bike for super rowdy trails like the lunch loops in Grand Junction. I'm a xc rider so it was way more bike then I needed. I have a Yeti ASR C, and that bike is perfect for me. Great review! Validated my thoughts!

and it is nimble if you know how to ride it!
-
and I can ride that bike hard as f**k maybe you're used to bikes with more travel but for me it's perfect!
-
I got a fuel ex 8 29er and I don't agree with you at all!

I think that the problem is that this bike has exactly the same frame as the 29er, and contrary to popular belief 27.5 plus tires are not quite as tall as 29er's (especially with the 2.8 this bike has instead of the standard 3"). They raised the fork travel on this high end one to try and compensate but it doesn't look like it worked. It looked to me like you were going considerably faster on the downhill than your other reviews though, did you get any strava data on the ride to compare?

That bottom bracket creak would drive me bonkers. Bummer to hear it's not quick & nimble.

Nice review,I bought a trek Stache 7 29er plus last year and love it ,I went to buy one of these in aluminium, but i promised myself a fat bike ,so I bought a trek Farley 2017 9.6 in carbon and love even more 27.5 x450 tyres brilliant, I be looking at a plus size in full suspension for next year ,so I will be looking at you channel for your reviews atb Steve

Pedal strikes!! Put 29 wheels on ... haha. If you don't have 29 wheels change out the Bontrager tires to Schwalbe Nobby Nics 2.8 with a better sidewall. Pump up the rear shock to at least 20lbs over your rider weight with gear on. The amount of pressure should have your sag to 15mm and measure the stroke after the ride to 53mm. That will improve (not cure) the pedal striking!!

Hey Jason, I love your channel! Keep it up. I back riding mtb after almost 20 yrs off. Coming from a BMX background and now 50 yrs old. I've been interested in this bike as well as the 29er. Only in the 8 series due to $. I'm 5-8" and 160
I ride fast but not as aggro any more. Dropping 3k so I'd appreciate input. Cheers -
Hey, any chance you can demo the Santa Cruz Tallboy 3. It also doubles up as 27.5+/29er. I like the idea as it's two bikes in one. It also may suffer from pedal strikes tho. Great reviews. Love it. Cheers.

What was the constant creaking sound (it wasn't the BB) and why didn't you fix it before the video?
-
Love my Trek fuel 9.8 27.5 plus.the only con was the 175 mm cranks. Just like you were talking about. I ended up switching the cranks to 170 mm. It lessened the pedal strikes tremendously. the only other struggles is trying to find the correct psi for the tires. I've cased the rear rim twice now. Once So bad that the rim could not be repaired.

Love the trail choice, the combination of climb & descent really helps us gauge the bike, thanks

Jason,
Would you get the Pivot Mach 429 Trail over this bike, if you are looking for a quicker handling machine? I'm looking to replace my old Epic Comp Carbon 26'er, but I'm 52 and want a little more plush, yet with some of the quick handling, so well known to the Epic's geometry. I'm thinking 29'er too, not 27.5. I'm 5'9 and about 164lbs. Also looking at the Pivot Switchblade as well. How would you compare the handling of the Switchblade vs. the 429 Trail in the tight turns? Thx. -
I have a 2015 trek fuel and known the 2016 upgrades on frame would of gotten that one. I have upgraded much of the parts to much higher quilitiy and very happy now.. got to have 36mm fork
