2012 GT Karakoram 1.0 29" Mountain Bike Overview

Wanted to provide folks with some closeup/information about the 2012 Karakoram 1.0 29'er that is very difficult to find information about as well as even find in stock anymore. Seems by the 1st quarter of 2012 just about all of them have been sold and GT isnt shipping anymore in the 2012 model year but keep looking, took me quite a while and driving thru multiple states to find it. Its been a great bike, really great component selection for the price point. Now we are not professional riders, can spend more money & get better but that pretty much goes for anything you buy. I feel that within this price range this really was the best selection of features/components. We also have not been on a mountain bike since the early 90s and its been over 18years since even owning a bike left alone this is my first 29"er. Wanted a bike that would holdup over a variety of terrain conditions, support my heavier than average rider weight, and last. Most of what we do is dirt/gravel riding, pavement path/roadway then starting to get into rooted/rutted/rocky single track. Nothing crazy, no jumping or high speed downhill but I would definetly say this bike would be capable of some serious downhill runs but that is beyond my interest. I am built for torque & not for speed, so I will leave the adrenaline-inducing moves to the younger/more agile folks. The folks at REI give great service. We have had it back for the complimentary tweak as well as to replace our stems, mine with a much more agressive/angled one than came stock. This was a free changeout thru REI. We also got it for 10% back with the member discount & they were already selling it for almost 10% below MSRP too. I am a larger rider, 6'1 & 290lbs and the bike does great. Run the tires with about 38psi it gives a smooth ride even on rough terrain. 100m Travel 32mm Rock SHox & 29" tires do well at absorbing hits. I did swap out the OEM grips with Ergon GP1 grips to help with some hand issues (unrelated to the bike). These are awesome grips, takes a little tweaking to set the angle right but once you do - a BIG difference. Went with Exir 1 hydraulic brakes becuase of the larger payload and larger tires. These breaks feel great and have really incredible stopping power. The brakes wont be the weak link in stopping, rather traction would be. The tires that came on it are great for my application, mixed riding including pavement. If you are dedicated single track & mud riding then perhaps a more aggressive tire would be preferred. If you are like us, getting back into biking or even looking to upgrade to something that wont break the bank, has quality components and if taken care of will last - take a serious look at the Karakoram 1.0. looking to sell this bike as shown plus additions of spring loaded hybrid gel seat and CA few small extras. this bike has less than 60miles ridden. love it but my back problems are not conducive to bike riding vas I hoped. $650 fixed price out the door cash. paid over 1100 for the bike with extras. willing to deliver in the 28714 and 28805 area. GPS and mount is not included

I have a 1994 one

yeah apparently when looking at bikes like these, despite their price, the majority have no stand. Having not owned a bike prior to this in over 18 years I found this strange.

I was watching this for the bike info.. But found that the camera mount was really helpful.. Thanks for the "ON THE FLY" tech tip! Take it easy and have fun, Pete

I used a razor knife to remove the old ones, unfortunately they are one time use only, it gets destroyed removing them. I used goof off to cleanoff the residue then I just slid the new ones one. Since these clamp at the end I didnt need to use any glue or anything. Was smooth going on and the clamp is all that was needed on the end. These new grips have made a very big difference I no longer have numbness in my right hand anymore. Thanks -

No, I was just wondering how you took off the rubber grips off the handle and installed the new ones. Any type of grease or glue you used, or just plain suction from the grip?
-
There were rubber gromit/plugs installed in the threaded holes, I just pulled them out with my fingers. If you are asking about the riser change out I am not really sure what was involved. Where we bought our bikes, REI, they swapped it out for free in their shop. They are a great place, really focusing on customer service. Hope this helps -

What did you use to pull out the plugs to install water bottle holder? When you installed the handles did you pull off the old ones? And if you did are they ruined now?

Thats great, glad to hear you found one that fit. The fork has been great. They also upped the model for 2012 to the 32mm diameter fork w/ 100mm travel. The fork has been smooth and strong. I don't jump off things fast but have taken it on real rough terrain. My top speed has been 35.8mph (just a test in 30th gear on a slight descent) I am a larger rider @ 6'1 & about 300lbs, which is why I went with the GT & its frame design. Preload, rebound & lockout adjustments are great. Its held up nice!

If you take a look at the Geometry link on the website it gives you the measurements of all angles of the frame. Your inseem is 35.4" tall. I have a 32.5" tall inseem and ride the medium. The Large should do you fine BUT its really something you will want to walk in & verify. If you are looking to order it online the next best thing is to find a store with any of the Karakoram bikes, 2.0 or 3.0 as the frame size is identical. Its what I did when buying mine so I knew the right size. Good luck

I dont think the bike weights a lot, but thats just me. It may to some hardcore folks that shave every ounce they can. To that I would say, dont eat for a day and take a good constitution before riding.... 1.85cm tall? What are you measuring? The key measurment is your inseem w/ feet flat on the ground. I cant put a link here but go to the gtbicycles site and look at the support link. There is a geometry link that will show you all the sizes of their models for a starting point. Thanks -
