This is the first 10 minutes of the TV coverage of the 1989 Carlsberg UK Mountain Bike championships held on a 30km circuit around the Rothiemurchus Estate near Aviemore in Scotland. This wasn't the first UK MTB champs (I think it was the 2nd or 3rd) but probably the first to be broadcast on mainstream TV. Ironically, such events don't get shown on TV any more ! Highlights of this footage include Phil Liggett explaining what mountain bikes are, and the fluorescent 80's cycling fashion. Pretty much every rider is using toeclips. There are none of the camelback drinking baggy shorts riders that you see today ! Everyone's got thumbshifters, cantilever brakes, no suspension. Lots of riders with pipe insulation foam around their crossbars, chainstay mounted u-brakes, 6/7 speed friction gears and Biopace chainrings. Perhaps some lucky pro riders had SIS indexed thumbshifters, GroundControl tyres, and studded shoes to help run up slopes.
